Hardening Efficiency and Microstructural Changes during Laser Surface Hardening of 50CrMo4 Steel

Laser surface hardening is an attractive heat treatment solution used to selectively enhance the properties of components by phase transformation. A quantitative parameter measure efficacy processes still lacking, which hinders its application in industries. In this paper, we propose a simple approach assess effectiveness process calculating thermal efficiency. The proposed method was applied calculate efficiency during different laser processing conditions. This study revealed that only small portion supplied energy (approximately 1–15%) utilized for hardening. For same system, highest achieved when melting just avoided. comparative showed pulsed lasers are more efficient utilization than continuous wave laser. Similarly, high-power found be higher low-power and increase beam absorption produces analysis hardened predominantly martensite. hardness value gradually decreased along depth, attributed decrease percentage
